This is a two (2) to five (5) month, paid, temporary position supporting Xanterra’s Sustainability Manager at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The Sustainability Intern will be involved in all aspects of sustainability management at the property, but will primarily focus on managing the Parksmart certification process from start to finish.
Manage the Parksmart certification process for the parking facility at Mount Rushmore. This involves reviewing requirements, creating and maintaining the project schedule, working with stakeholders, creating required programs, documenting compliance, and submitting reports.
Participate in the LEED Building Operations and Maintenance: Existing Buildings (LEED O+M: EB) v4 certification process for the concession building at Mount Rushmore by identifying and documenting compliance with specific credit requirements.
Contribute the Green Restaurant Association certification process by working with Food and Beverage staff to gather and tabulate data and communicate requirements.
Record, analyze, and report on utility data variances.
Take part in the design, construction, management, and operation of a rooftop vegetable greenhouse.
Serve as a champion for recycling, composting, and waste reduction with other employees.
Write employee newsletters and guest communication pieces addressing sustainability and climate change.
Assist the Sustainability Manager with various educational and training programs for staff and guests on recycling and sustainability.
Review and update environmental management programs and manuals including ISO 14001 EMS documentation. Analyze programs for effectiveness and implement improvements.
Assist with the establishment of an ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
Support the Sustainability Manager in managing the planning and completion of other capital projects such as a photovoltaic carport installation, lighting retrofits, EV charging stations, etc.
Monitor and liaise with environmental consultants and contractors to achieve company goals.
Direct and assist the Recyclers with the planning and operation of a 1,500 sq. ft. garden.
Help the Recyclers with the collection and transportation of recycling and composting as needed.
Complete other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience: Candidates must have earned, or be actively pursuing, an undergraduate or graduate degree in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, business, or a related field. 0-3 years of related work experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of sustainability practices including recycling, gardening, composting, sustainable purchasing, energy efficiency, green building, and project management are beneficial, but not required.
Skills: Candidates should be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing, are essential.
Certificates & Licenses: This position requires a valid driver’s license. It is preferred that candidates are pursuing, or have earned, the LEED GA or LEED AP credential.
Work Ethic: The individual must be a self-starter who can work with minimal supervision while working within the guidelines set by their supervisor. The individual must have the capacity to work in a fast-paced environment where project priorities, task deadlines, and assignments can change quickly.

The employee must possess physical stamina and condition to withstand extensive standing, lifting, stooping, and bending involved in moving and transporting supplies and equipment weighing from 20 to 50 pounds.
